ASU geographers’ participation in Global Climate Change 2016 international youth conference

15 March 2016 Faculty of Geography
International youth conference GLCC 2016 took place from 29 February to 1 March on the premises of Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).

Altai State University was represented there by Faculty of Geography students V. Biryukov, A. Volkova and A. Plekhova.

In the course of registration students were supposed to choose a territory for research from a list of Russian constituent entities. After that the participants were divided into 6 geographic committees (Russia, Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa, Australia and Oceania).

Two days of the conference were full of scientific and educational events. Official opening ceremony with the participation of specially invited guests (Vice-Head of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Russia Igor Shumakov, director of Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory Vladimir Katsov, chief editor of National Geographic Russia Alexander Grek and others) was held in MGIMO campus. The conference was conducted in the form of the UN model – the participants presented their research results in the form of role playing game that reproduces the UN work. According to Anna Plekhova, it was unusual at first, because during the event the participants had to refer to each other not by their names, but as if they were delegated from Great Britain or any other country. However, the game broke the monotony of the scientific conference, as the participants’ reports and discussions were held in a serious, informative, objective manner.

All delegates were representing either Russian constituent entities, or world’s countries. Vladimir Biryukov and Anastasia Volkova were sitting in the European Committee and represented Iceland and Bulgary respectively. Anna Plekhova was representing Altai Krai and the Republic of Altai in the Russian Federation Committee. On the first day of the conference every participant voiced the point of view of the selected country or Russian constituent territory on the global climate problem: strategy on decrease of the climate pressure, ways of adjustment to the current changes in the world, events dedicated to moderation of climate impact on the most important parts of human life. Further, the work continued in the small groups that were creating the list of the most important aspects of the climate problem.

On the second day of the conference all committees were supposed to submit their thesis lists and present what they had successfully prepared in the course of long and productive discussions. The work resulted in choosing one participant from each committee – they were expected to join their efforts and develop positive and negative aspects of climate change effect on territory. The outcome of the two days’ work has been resolution, which was adopted and approved by all delegates.

Conference participants were provided with a unique opportunity not only to make a contribution to the research of the effect of global climate changes on the environment, but also listen to the lectures delivered by the guest speakers. Head of the Department of Multilateral Cooperation in Environmental Conservation under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oleg Shamanov spoke about the past, present and future of the international climatic regime, Russia’s position and Framework Conventions on Climate Change negotiations. Nobel laureate as part of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, director of Center for Energy-Efficient Policy Igor Bashmakov touched upon low-carbon transformation of economy and society in Russia and its prospects till 2050. Moreover, students participated in the round tables on the topic of the conference.

Every delegate has acquired the unique experience in joint work with other Russian and foreign students on the research of the important issues, broadening of scientific outlook, establishment of contacts, which increase ASU involvement in scientific and innovative activities. Vladimir Biryukov expressed everyone’s opinion and said that it had been very pleasant to take part in such major project and make a contribution to the research of a relevant problem.
