On November 12, the 72-hour continuing education program “Legal Aspects of Transboundary Water Bodies Management” was launched at Altai State University.

The program, which will finish its work on November 16, is attended by the staff of Altai State University’s Faculty of Geography and the university’s partners – the Institute of Water and Environmental Problems under the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan State University.

The program started with an introductory lecture on the basics of international water law by Tatyana V. Antyufeeva, Assistant Professor at the Department of Environmental Management and Geoecology. T.V. Antyufeeva focused on the issue of organizing the management of transboundary water bodies on the basis of international law and the widespread introduction of integrated water resources management. It is worth noting that the topics of lectures and practical exercises in this course were of not only academic, but also practical interest. The course was attended by specialists working in the field of water management, rational use of water resources and related areas to promote the development of water management.

The continuing education program “Legal Aspects of Transboundary Water Bodies Management” is a continuation of work under a grant from the European Union and is being implemented to widely disseminate the results of the international environmental project TREASURE-Water.

Department of Environmental Management and Geoecology headed by Professor G.Ya. Baryshnikov has been participating in the implementation of the international project Trans-Regional Environmental Awareness for Sustainable Usage of Water Resources (TREASURE-Water) / Institutional Partnership for Sustainable Transboundary Water Use: Russia and Kazakhstan for the third year.

The project is dedicated to solving an urgent task – improving coordination of the activities of two border states, Russia and Kazakhstan, in the field of transboundary water use through the development of inter-institutional partnership. This project is being implemented with financial support from the European Union (EU).

To implement the Erasmus + project, a working group was created at Altai State University, which includes lecturers of the Faculty of Geography. The final stage of the TREASURE-Water project will be the modernization of educational resources, professional retraining of academic staff based on an interdisciplinary approach to the problems of sustainable water use and the introduction of new modules and courses in the system of professional retraining of specialists in the field of water management.

The Department of Environmental Management and Geoecology of Altai State University invites all interested parties to discuss international legal norms for managing transboundary water bodies.
