Famous American virologist delivered a lecture at ASU

21 April 2016 Public Relations Department
Today professor of Emory University (Atlanta, the USA) George R. Painter visited ASU Library and spoke on new trends in fighting against viral infections.

The audience included students and lecturers of Faculty of Biology and Faculty of Chemistry.

Professor Painter has made a report about the latest results in searching for RNA polymerase inhibitors that are the key enzymes for RNA-containing dangerous viruses such as Ebola, HIV, tick-borne encephalitis, Zika virus and so on. Moreover, the American scientist has also presented the most recent developments of antiviral medications, which Emory University researchers are currently working on. At the end of the lecture professor Painter answered the listeners’ questions.

Dean of ASU Faculty of Chemistry, head of the Department of Organic Chemistry N.G. Bazarnova commented on the opportunity of collaboration between ASU chemists and Emory University scientists:

“The prospects for collaboration are very good. In the foreseeable future professor Painter and I are going to discuss our further plans. Particularly, we may come to the collaboration in Master’s Degree programs, which are currently realized at our faculty (“Organic Chemistry” and “Biopharmaceuticals Development through Recombinant Technologies”). Influenza, herpes, tick-borne encephalitis viruses, which were discussed earlier by Mr. Painter, are also in the center of ASU chemists’ attention. We are working on creation of medication against these viruses that will be based on matter received from plant raw materials. The approach suggested by our American colleagues is also realizable. They are searching for enzyme that will affect both tick-borne encephalitis and herpes viruses. We are interested in it as well.”

After the lecture professor Painter visited Faculty of Chemistry laboratories, Scientific and Research Institute for Biomedicine and Russian-American Anticancer Center and attended the meeting with the university authorities.
