On 29 April 2017 Altai State University laid out an orchard on the territory of ASU camping site in Chemal, Altai Mountains in the framework of the Year of Ecology in Russia.

Despite all the days-off and holidays, representatives of the university’s senior personnel participated in the campaign. On Saturday vice-rectors, deans and heads of some departments arrived at the camping site by bus in order to plant a number of fruit trees: apple, plum, apricot and cherry trees. ASU Rector Sergey V. Zemlyukov headed the working team.

Director of the camping site in Chemal Vladimir N. Yegorov welcomed the guests and took them on a small excursion tour. He showed them a water tower, living space with amenities, a refectory, a bath-house, and foundation for an educational pavilion.

Vice Rector for Scientific and Innovative Development E.S. Popov and Candidate of Physical and Head of the Laboratory for Physical Problems of Agrosystem Monitoring, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences V.V. Scherbinin demonstrated a new automatic weather station and touched upon the principles of its work.

“This territory was an open field 4 years ago. Now we have built 6 accommodation units, a bath-house, and the construction of classrooms is almost completed. In anticipation of the holidays we decided to plant an orchard in the framework of the Year of Ecology. I am sure that our students, future biologists and geographers, people who will come here for training or just to relax will think with gratitude about the founders of this orchard,” said Sergey V. Zemlyukov. “According to the popular tradition, every person should plant a tree at least once in their life. We have planted 40 trees today in the name of Altai State University. Let our university grow and the team of our employees strengthen together with these trees. This orchard will be a beginning of success, new achievements and kind traditions.”

Rector of Altai State University also noted that creation of orchards is to be carried out at other camping sites as well.
