Altai State University is making preparations for the XIII International Scientific Conference “Environmental Conditions, History and Culture of Western Mongolia and Cross-Border Regions”, which will take place on 20–22 September 2017.

For the present day, one of the most relevant problems is influence of global changes on development and ecology of highland areas. It calls for the pursuance of the research of specific environmental conditions, historical and cultural values, ethnosocial and economic processes; for employing new approaches towards optimal resource management, preservation of biological and cultural diversity; for discussion of models and factors for sustainable growth. Highland areas, which include Western Mongolia, are characterized by increased vulnerability of geologic and ecologic systems, so they take priority in international practice of adaptation strategies development. Western Mongolia is geographically located within the Altai Mountain System, while its cross-border regions are territories of Russian Altai and Southern Siberia.

The XIII International Scientific Conference “Environmental Conditions, History and Culture of Western Mongolia and Cross-Border Regions” is a geopolitically important interdisciplinary scientific forum organized by Khovd State University in Mongolia and one of the Russian higher education establishments located in the cross-border region – the south of Western Siberia.

In 2017 Altai State University has become such an establishment. It carries out strong interdisciplinary scientific and educational cooperation with Khovd University, which comporises such events as geographical, biological, historical, cultural and archaeological research, as well as classes of the Russian language for Mongolian students both in Russia (Altai State University) and Mongolia (Khovd State University). Such international collaboration facilitates the development of the whole Altai region.

Aims of the conference: interdisciplinary exchange of scientific information, experience and achievements; discussion of the relevant issues concerning research of Western Mongolia and cross-border regions; definition of prospects for international cooperation in terms of scientific and technical progress and sustainable growth.
