Yesterday Altai State University carried out ceremonial opening of the I International Academic Forum for Students and Young Scientists “Life Sciences: from Theory to Practice”.

The conference combines two events – the first international youth scientific conference and the third youth biotechnological school on recombinant proteins and vaccines.

“The topic of the forum is high-priority for Altai State University. Life sciences are a direction, which had formed at the university at the moment of its establishment and has been actively developed for the past 6 years. In 2011 this topic was included into the university’s strategic program referred to as “living systems”. This forum is indeed the first forum in the format of interdisciplinary interaction. It hosts scientists from different areas of knowledge, as well as representatives of medical society. We hope that this forum will help to attract more young scientists and scientific teams to research areas developed by ASU, which will allow achieving significant results,” Vice Rector for Scientific and Innovative Development of ASU Evgeni S. Popov said.

The forum hosts over 150 attendees, speakers and experts, who represent universities and academic institutions of Moscow, Voronezh, Perm, Orenburg, Novosibirsk, Vladivostok, and other Russian cities. The conference is also attended by delegates from the United States of America, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.

According to Chief Physician of Altai Regional Oncologic Dispensary, Honoured Doctor of Russian Federation, Head of the Department of Oncology of Altai State Medical University, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Alexander F. Lazarev, the title of the conference has set the tone for the whole event.

“A lot has changed in our lives for the present day. In particular, preventing mechanisms have started working in cancer therapy. Anti-Cancer Center of Altai State University is on the frontline here. Center’s research allows us understand regulation mechanisms in human organism better, so now we know how to build up protection system. Thanks to methods for early cancer detection and tests we can help more oncology patients. These methods appear here, in university laboratories and centers, in the heads of enthusiastic scientists. We navigate towards a common goal important for all people. We move forward despite the cynicism about our work, the result of which are saved lives,” Alexander F. Lazarev emphasized in his speech.

The working part of the forum was opened with a plenary report by Head of the Laboratory for Personalized Medicine under the Center for New Medical Technologies at the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Galina I. Lifshits. Her speech was dedicated to the technology of personalized medicine, which was included in the list of priority directions of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation by the presidential decree.

It remains to be added that the work of the I International Academic Forum for Students and Young Scientists “Life Sciences: from Theory to Practice” will last till September 16.
