ASU student volunteers at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Switzerland

Artem Tarasov, a student of the Faculty of Mass Communications, Philology and Political Science at Altai State University, became a volunteer of the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games, which are held from January 9 to January 22 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Artem has broad experience in volunteering at major international events. He took part in the 2018 World Cup and the XXIX World Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk.

“The Mobility Program from the Association of Volunteer Centers helped with the flight and accommodation. And the games are fantastic! Firstly, this is the most “Olympic” place in the world – Lausanne. Secondly, future world sports stars compete here,” Artem Tarasov said.

Almost two thousand athletes from more than 70 countries take part in the Youth Olympic Games – these are athletes from 15 to 18 years old. A total of 81 sets of medals in 16 disciplines are up for grabs in Switzerland this month.

According to the student of Altai State University, the Youth Olympic Games provide an excellent experience in participation and organization of major sporting events and in communicating with foreigners.

The 2020 Youth Olympic Games program includes biathlon, bobsleigh / skeleton, curling, ice hockey, sledding, ice skating / figure skating, skiing / ski jumping / snowboarding and ski mountaineering. In addition to this, several new disciplines will debut in the official program.

The Youth Winter Olympic Games have been held since 2012 among junior athletes. The Russian national team is the second largest delegation at the Youth Winter Olympic Games, 104 athletes are members of the national team. At the moment, our team is leading the medal standings. After four days of competition, there are four gold, five silver and two bronze medals on the account of Russian athletes. In total, Russian athletes have won 11 medals of the Youth Olympic Games.
