Professor from Altai State University was included in the Interdepartmental Commission on Genetic Resources by a decree of the President of Russia

Director of the South Siberian Botanical Garden, Professor of Altai State University Alexander Shmakov, by a decree of the President of the Russian Federation, was included in the interdepartmental commission on the formation, conservation, and use of collections of genetic resources. The decree was signed on the Day of Russian Science, 8 February.

The Commission was established to ensure the coordination of the activities of the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources on the basis of the Federal Research Center of the All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources named after Nikolai Vavilov.

The Commission is intended to take part in solving the issues of formation and replenishment of the national catalogue of especially valuable samples of plant genetic resources, as well as ensuring guaranteed long-term preservation, maintenance and reproduction of samples included in the national catalogue. The scientists of the commission will pay attention to the development of methods for collecting, storing, comprehensive assessment and use of samples of plant genetic resources, including the use of modern methods of scientific research, advanced ideas, and cutting-edge technologies.

Since 2021, the team led by Professor Shmakov has been participating in the project “Herbarium Funds of the Biological Diversity of Plants and Fungi of the Collection Fund of Komarov Botanical Institute RAS: modernization, development and networking as a basis for fundamental research and improvement of genetic technologies” under the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies for 2019–2027.

Vladimir Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences is a partner of the consortium of the Altai State University "Study and conservation of biodiversity and genetic resources of North and Central Asia" within the framework of the Priority 2030 Program.
