Teachers and students of the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology of Altai State University help to create an environmentally thoughtful and comfortable recreation area in the Izumbrudny park of Barnaul.

Students and teachers of the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology of AltSU actively cooperate with the park, helping in organizing city events and describing its flora and fauna. Recently, an initiative group led by Director of the Institute Marina Silantyeva and Senior Lecturer of the Department of Botany Tatiana Kornievskaya took part in the implementation of the initial stage of the "Blooming Islet in the Izumbrudny Park" project.

“The Izumbrudny park should have its own peculiar place with a special atmosphere which will attract citizens with its beauty and originality. We came up with an initiative to help with the design of such a place. As a result, it was decided to ennoble and decorate the islet on the pond that was once popular among visitors to the park’, says the initiator of the project, Director of the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology of Altai State University Marina Silantieva. “We want to turn this concrete islet into a green, blooming nook of Barnaul, so that townspeople can fully relax here, enjoy the fragrance and bright colors of wildlife”.

According to Marina Silantieva, the islet will be divided into several sectors, where various plant species will bloom from April to October. It is also planned to install photo zones here so that those who wish can take beautiful, colorful photographs.

“A new, cozy gazebo should become the symbol of this natural park. Here, it is necessary to place pergolas and benches for the plants to climb, and make an overlook path. These objects will allow people to scatter around the islet and retire amid blooming diversity. So, for example, we propose to organize three sectors that differ not only in design, but also in the color and habitual composition of plants. We also want creepers to wrap around and cover all the concrete blocks, so that the islet will look exactly like a green spot in the park from afar. In general, we are planning to create an object in a modern European style of a new wave, which will be attractive for the entire working season of the park”, says Marina Silantieva.

Now the planting material has been selected for a full-scale start of the project in the spring of 2021. It is provided by the South Siberian Botanical Garden of Altai State University.
