ASU lecturers took part in Cognitive Linguistics Seminar

The first International Cognitive Linguistics and Pragmatics (TOWOCOLP) Seminar was held at National Research Tomsk State University on October 27, 2015, which was attended by the ASU Faculty of Mass Communications, Philology and Political Science lecturers, Doctor of Philology, Professor V.N. Karpukhina and Candidate of Philology, Assistant Professor Yu.V. Yavinskaya.

The Seminar included lectures and master classes in English and Russian given by prominent cognitive scientists from different countries: Professor David Gillespie (Bath, Great Britain), Professor Istvan Kecskes (Albany, NY, USA), Professor Jacques Moeschler (Geneva, Switzerland), professor Dirk Geeraerts (Leuven, Belgium), Professor Jean-Claude Regnier (Lyon, France), Professor Klaus Schneider (Bonn, Germany).

On October 28-30, 2015, the 26th International Scientific Conference “Language and Culture” dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Faculty of Foreign Languages of Tomsk State University was held at Tomsk State University.

Besides the invited foreign guests and experts participating in TOWOCOLP scientific seminar, Russian cognitive scientists, sociolinguists and linguoculturalogical specialists, Doctor of Philology, Professor, Dean of TSU Faculty of Foreign Languages S.K. Gural, Doctor of Philology, Professor V.I. Karasik (Volgograd State Pedagogical University), Doctor of Philology, Professor T.V. Serova (Perm National Research Polytechnic University), Doctor of Philology, Professor O.A. Leontovitch (Volgograd State Pedagogical University), Doctor of Philology, Professor A.L. Nazarenko (Moscow State University), delivered their reports at plenary sessions and section meetings.

Doctor of Philology, Professor N.V. Baryshnikov (Pyatigorsk State Linguistic University) addressed TSU Faculty of Foreign Languages with an ardent congratulatory speech “from the root of green Mashuk Mountain and snow-white Elbrus”.

Doctor of Philology, Professor V.N. Karpukhina delivered her presentation on Minus–Space Of Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky And Plus–Space Of Mikhail Bulgakov In Translations Of Their Texts Into English at section meeting Problems of Translation and Theoretical Foundations of Discourse Analysis. The presentation sparked a lively discussion and was noted to be the most interesting at the section on suggested material and methods in text-analysis.

Candidate of Philology, Assistant Professor Yu.V. Yavinskaya delivered a presentation on the topic Targeted Audience In Advertisements With Regards To Aspects Of Speech Standards at the section Interdisciplinary Research in Culture and Cross-Cultural Communication. She was recognized as the most active participant in the section meeting since she asked the speakers the most pressing questions.

Features of Lyric Translation seminar by Marko Elert (Potsdam), Country Studies By Means Of Cinematography master class by Mikhail Zagot (Moscow), Responsibility in Journalistic Translation master class by Olga Al-Akhmed (Bulgaria) were conducted in the framework of the Conference.

The Conference participants were able to enjoy Tomsk sightseeing tours in the historic part of the city with its fantastic architecture, to listen to the lyrical concert of Eugenie Doga at the Philharmonic Hall and to see a marvelous classical production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake performed by the Saint-Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre touring troupe.
