ASU hosted Russian-Finnish seminar on post-Soviet border zone

The International Seminar "Post-Soviet Border Zone as a Territory of Development" was held at Altai State University on August 23 with the active participation of sociological, historical and geographical faculties’ scientists who received a delegation from the University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu).

When delivering a welcoming speech, Roman Raikin, Vice-Rector for International Affairs Development of ASU, noted that the mission of the university and its strategic development program imply the strengthening of the university as a center for supporting the social and economic development of the region as a zone for cross-border cooperation.

The Finnish delegation was led by Jeremy Smith, Professor at the University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu). He made a report entitled "Transformation of the Borders of the Soviet Republics into International Borders". The professor touched upon the overall concept of the project and the history of its creation, shared plans for future research, including in Altai Krai.

In turn, the participants from Altai State University and their Finnish colleagues talked about the already existing developments and results of research projects conducted in areas related to the subject of the border area.
