On March 17, Barnaul City Administration held a discussion of a draft concept for the development of green spaces of the city proposed by the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology of Altai State University.

The draft concept of landscaping of Barnaul, developed by a team of scientists from the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology of Altai State University, was considered at a meeting in the city administration chaired by Anatoly F. Voronkov, First Deputy Head of the City Administration on Road Improvement Complex. AltSU project team was represented at the meeting by acting Director of IBB of AltSU, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Marina M. Silantyeva, Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor of the Department of Botany Tatyana A. Terekhina and President of Altai State University, Doctor of Law, Professor Sergey V. Zemlyukov.

The project, developed by AltSU's scientists, was called the “New Green Wave”. It aims to improve the landscaping system to ensure environmental well-being and increase population satisfaction with the urban space, taking into account economic and social factors. The “New Green Wave” project is based on a global trend to weave nature into the urban environment using the principles of greening of natural ecosystems. European and American cities are actively introducing such a model of landscaping. But AltSU's biologists offer their original solutions in terms of landscape design and plant assortment in accordance with the climatic conditions of our region. The leading role is given to woody plants around which shrubs and herbaceous perennials are planted. Group plantings will imitate the natural environment, possibly widespread use of native species.

“Green spaces heal the airshed and improve the microclimate in the city. This is the absorption of carbon dioxide, and the release of oxygen, and a decrease in air temperature due to evaporation of moisture, and a decrease in noise and pollution, and the release of phytoncides by plants, which contribute to air disinfection. We believe that it is necessary to create massive green areas on the principle of greening of natural ecosystems within walking distance in places of direct residence, in those areas of the city where there are vacant lots and abandoned areas of greenery”, Marina M. Silantieva noted in her speech.

AltSU provides the development of all components of the project. For example, the spatial structure of landscaping will include the creation of a GIS project covering green areas of the city and an analysis of the living condition of woody plants within the city. The development of the functional structure of landscaping provides for an expert assessment of the current state of city parks and squares, substantiation of the sufficiency of their number and the establishment of their functional purpose. In particular, it is possible to create in Barnaul such unusual parks as a biodiversity park, a skate park, a park for walkers with prams, etc.

The project will allow to attract other universities of the city, Institute for Water and Environmental Problems of the Siberian Branch of the RAS, Federal Altai Scientific Center for Agrobiotechnology, public organizations and private investors for collaboration.

The final version of the “New Green Wave” concept will be completed by the end of 2021.
