One of the most colorful and attractive objects that adorned Barnaul on the eve of its Day is a flower bed in front of the main building of Altai State University.

Altai State University receives a large number of grateful responses from the townspeople, admiring the beauty of the multicolor that appeared in front of the M building of the flagship university in the summer.

Specialists of the South Siberian Botanical Garden of Altai State University planted here more than 15 thousand roots of flowers of varieties and species: petunias, dahlias, tagetis or marigolds, cannes, osteospermum, salvia and cineraria.

Director of the South Siberian Botanical Garden of Altai State University, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Alexander Shmakov notes that the preparation of seedlings for the flower bed has been carried out since February this year, when the first seeds of flowers were sown in the SSBG greenhouses: salvia, cineraria, petunia. Depending on the culture, the seedlings were transplanted several times, then planted into special cups and delivered to the main flower bed of the university.

“All these species and varieties of plants tolerate pricking off well, develop and bloom for a long time, almost until the first frost. In addition, we have selected cultures that match each other in colors, so that a look at the flower bed would bring aesthetic pleasure to employees, university students and townspeople”, explained Alexander Shmakov.

Oleg Ilinykh, Vice-Rector for Security and General Affairs of Altai State University, noted that the flowerbed in front of the main building of the university was built in 2014 from decorative bricks. Its project was approved by the Committee for Construction, Architecture and Development of Barnaul. For easy maintenance (watering flowers, maintaining the cleanliness of decorative finishes, etc.), water is supplied directly to the flower bed. At the same time, 5 blue spruce trees were planted nearby.

In the conditions of closed borders, the green space in front of the main building of the university has become a favorite place for rest of the townspeople, a meeting place for young lovers.

The administration of the university thanks Director of the South Siberian Botanical Garden of Altai State University Alexander Shmakov and SSBG employees for creating one of the most comfortable corners of the regional capital.
