AltSU expands cooperation with universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Head of the Department of Oriental Studies of the Institute of History and International Relations of Altai State University, Doctor of Historical Sciences Yulia Lysenko in February 2021 started a course of lectures for the faculty, graduate students, undergraduates and students of the Karaganda State University named after E.A. Buketov.

The course that Professor Yu. Lysenko suggested to her colleagues from Kazakhstan, is devoted to the history of the religious policy of the Russian Empire in relation to the Muslim regions of the Volga region, the Caucasus, Siberia, the Steppes and Turkestan. A comparative analysis of this policy is carried out on the basis of specific material.

Acquaintance with this course will allow students to learn the problems of new imperial history, postcolonial studies and other modern methodological approaches. The course should show, on the one hand, the regional specifics and diversity of the state policy practices of the Russian Empire, implemented in the Muslim regions of the Russian Empire. On the other hand, it emphasizes the links between them at different levels, considers the forms of interaction between different layers of their population with the central and regional authorities, foreign Muslim centers and among themselves in the 18th - early 20th centuries. The course is also aimed at informing students about the main works and areas of research on this issue, and the basic ideas and concepts of the topic.

General overview parts of the course are devoted to the problems of managing differences in the Russian Empire in relation to Muslim regions, the concepts of nationalism in its connections with the construction of religious identities, cultural aspects of power politics, the formation of colonial knowledge, and the figures of colonial mediators who came from Muslim societies.

Due to the pandemic, classes are held in the form of guest lectures, seminars, master classes in a distance format. Upon completion of the course for a total of 72 hours, students will receive certificates of advanced training.

It is worth mentioning that AltSU is actively developing cooperation with the KarSU named after E.A. Buketov in a scientific and humanitarian format. For a number of years, the platform for this has been the Honorary Department "Kazakhstani Way and N. Nazarbayev" of AltSU. Over the past two years, universities have been strengthening their interaction within the framework of the implementation of the International Scientific and Educational Project "Turkic World of the Greater Altai: Unity and Diversity in History and Modernity", which is implemented by the REC of Altaistics and Turkology "The Greater Altai" of AltSU.
