Altai Krai's official website reported about AltSU’s patent for diagnosing breast cancer

The official website of Altai Krai published information that the staff of the Russian-American Anti-Cancer Center (RAAC) of Altai State University, in cooperation with the regional oncological dispensary and Altai State Medical University, have developed a unique method for detecting breast cancer using the immunosignature technology.

It will help to detect cancer at an early stage.

“Any molecular changes are immediately reflected in the immune system, it starts producing antibodies, and they also differ in different diseases. The task was to decipher this signal and understand which antibodies are produced, in this case, in breast cancer. Microchips, created by scientists in Arizona, have 120 thousand peptides with random amino acid sequences; when the blood serum interacts with some of them, antibodies interact. The RAAC’s scientists have identified 119 peptides that can clearly tell if there is breast cancer,” said Andrei Shapoval, Head of the RAAC.

The patented invention can be used in addition to methods for the clinical diagnosis of breast cancer. The set of peptides according to the invention can be used in the format of an independent test system, as well as in combination with other analytical systems to improve the efficiency of breast cancer diagnostics.

The immunosignature technology is a method which uses a drop of blood to diagnose cancer. It was developed by American scientists. The patient's blood is applied on a microchip with 120 thousand peptides, and the interaction of antibodies with the peptides is analyzed. To diagnose cancer, scientists compare antibodies in the blood serum of healthy people and those with cancer. Scientists have been conducting joint research in this direction in Altai Krai and the United States since 2013.
