Siberian Ornithological Conference starts on October 23 in Altai State University and is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of birth of famous Russian ornithologist Eduard Andreevitch Irisov (1935-1995).

The classical university is organizing the event in collaboration with Institute of Systematics and Ecology of Animals of SB RAS and Altai Branch of Russian Birds Conservation Union.

This is the 4th conference dedicated to the memory of the outstanding scholar Eduard A. Irisov, held on his anniversary. The geography is broad – the Conference hosts ornithologists from all regions of Russia. In particular, the scientists from Nizhniy Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Moscow, Altai Krai have come to Barnaul this year.

“Eduard A. Irisov can be justly called the founder of Altai ornithology. He always was an idea machine and educated a great number of talented scientists,” says co-chair of the Conference, Assistant Professor of the ASU Department of Zoology and Physiology, Candidate of Biology Nadezhda L. Irisova. “The major scientific area he had been studying for many years is birds’ adaptation to the extreme environmental conditions. He was interested in how birds can survive under conditions of rarefied air at high altitude, so he suggested a hypothesis that birds originate from the mountains, where the oxygen concentration is low.”

A number of the conference reports are dealing with this topic. For example, the speeches concerning the peculiarities of birds population in the mountains of Eastern Siberia, the altitudinal and zonal structure of avifauna in the central part of Verkhoyansk Range, the nesting habits of black kite in Altai Krai cities will be delivered. Some reports will focus on the study of rare birds species and the ecology of their population, avi-phenology in some Altai Krai regions, seasonal change of some birds’ habitat area, etc.

On October 24 the Conference participants are visiting the Altai Falcon breeding center.

The Siberian Ornithological Conference proceedings will be published in the 9th issue of Altai Zoological Journal. The opening session is taking place on October 23 at 9:00 a.m. at Altai State University (Russia, Barnaul, pr. Lenina 61, Room 416L).
