ASU geographers participated in an international conference in Mongolia

Scientists of the Faculty of Geography took part in the 3rd International Conference  on “Natural Condition and Territorial Aspects Influencing in Socio-Economic Development”, which was held in Ulan-Bator, Mongolia.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia. It was held on 11–12 January 2017 in the National University of Mongolia. The geographers of Altai State University presented 4 reports:

  • “Spatial Planning as a Basis for Creating Ecological Framework of Steppe Landscapes (as exemplified by the territory of Altai Krai)” by Candidate of Geography, Assistant Professor O.N. Baryshnikova;
  • “Using Ecological and Geographical Mapping of Vegetation for the Purpose of  Rational Environmental Management and Nature Conservation in Altai Krai (Russia)” by master’s degree student V.V. Gaida (co-authored by I.N. Rotanova);
  • “Showing the Specific Character of Environmental Conditions and Conservation Areas in “The Great Altai: Nature, History, Culture” Atlas” by Candidate of Geography, Assistant Professor I.N. Rotanova (co-authored by G.A. Efremov);
  • “Developing the Inventory of Tourist and Recreation Resources in Altai Krai in Terms of Green Economy” by Candidate of Geography, Assistant Professor I.N. Rotanova (co-authored by N.F. Kharlamova).

The conference was attended by employees of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia, lecturers and scientists from Mongolia, Russia, Uzbekistan, the Republic of Korea, China, Thailand, Japan, and experts of different international organizations. The participants exchanged the latest scientific developments and experience in addressing the problems in social and economic advancement with due account for territorial and environmental conditions, climate adaptation, and discussed the prospects for cooperation. Over 70 reports on theory and practice of sustainable and green growth, rational environmental management and conservation, current climate parameters, ways of climate adaptation, renewable energy sources were delivered.

Reports made by geographers of Altai State University attracted attention of Mongolian scientists. At the end of the conference representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia commended ASU scientists’ work. Mongolian scientists expressed their willingness to further collaboration.

Delegation of Altai State University and representatives of Khovd State University, who also attended the conference in Ulan-Bator, discussed the organizational policies of the XIII International Scientific Conference “Environmental Conditions, History and Culture of Western Mongolia and Adjacent Regions”, which will be co-hosted by Khovd State University, Altai State University and other partners in 2017 on the premises of ASU.

Participation in the 3rd International Scientific Conference on “Natural Condition and Territorial Aspects Influencing in Socio-Economic Development” became possible due to the grant of Russian Foundation for Basic Research. The grant is dedicated to creation of the Great Altai Atlas, the materials on which were presented at the conference.
