On 25 March 2017 students studying at the Faculty of Biology of Altai State University joined the Earth Hour. Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It encourages people to turn off the light for one hour in order to show their commitment to our planet. Even the lights of the most famous buildings and monuments of the world are turned off. On 25 March 2017 the Earth Hour campaign was held for the 10th time.

“We want future generations to live on the clean planet, breathe uncontaminated air. We want to conserve forests and wildlife. Students of the Faculty of Biology even distributed leaflets containing information on the Earth Hour in order to remind everyone about the necessity of environmental conservation. We can save our planet by combined efforts!” said cultural organizer of the Faculty of Biology Daria Zabolotskaya.

“I was glad to find out that a lot of people had already been aware of the Earth Hour without our reminders and leaflets. Students and employees of Altai State University unitedly supported the initiative and turned the lights off at 8:30 pm. This campaign is crucial for our children and for our future,” noted Vice Dean for Extracurricular Work of the Faculty of Biology Tatiana V. Antonenko.

“I think that dedicating to the Earth at least one hour is a great idea, because environmental friendliness is very important. I was very excited about the participation in this campaign. It would be amazing if more and more people joined the movement each year. We should take care of our planet,” said master’s degree student Valentina Novikova.

Earth Hour movement is not aimed at electricity saving. This campaign is a symbol of careful attitude towards nature. Each year this event allows attracting attention of many people to the problems of environment conservation.
For the present moment the Earth Hour is the most large-scale ecological campaign in the world. Over 2 billion people from more than 175 countries and 7000 cities participate in the movement.
The topic of the Earth Hour 2017 was people’s responsibility for nature. People lay impact on everything around them – earth, air, water, forests and even humanity itself. WWF informed everybody how they could make the ordinary habits more ecologically friendly and presented a number of recommendations in different categories.
