As part of the Priority 2030 Program, the Research Institute of Biological Medicine of Altai State University is implementing the project “Development of a functional food product with plant extracts for personalized medicine in order to prevent and treat nephrotic syndrome and chronic kidney disease.”

The work was carried out in consortium with Altai State Medical University. Scientists have developed a kissel with a plant extract of Lespedeza bicolor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and other medicinal properties of which were known in ancient China and Japan and were used in folk medicine. As part of the project, scientists have proven that a functional product developed on the basis of the extract has a beneficial effect on the course of experimental renal failure in animals. This, in turn, makes it possible to use the product for people as a prophylactic.

It is not the first time that AltSU and ASMU scientists have been collaborating in the field of science, and this project is no exception. The medical university has a vivarium and the possibility to conduct biochemical studies, and AltSU has a modern laboratory of morphology for histological studies. They were conducted by Natalya Semenikhina, a senior researcher at the Scientific Research Institute of Biological Medicine of Altai State University.

“Our laboratory of morphology is equipped with high-tech equipment for conducting and staining tissues, rotary and sledge microtomes, as well as Zeiss light microscopes. In the project, I was engaged in the histological examination of organs and tissues of animals with diseases of the urinary system, which were treated with our drug. That is, I assessed the structure of the kidneys at the tissue level, comparing whether there are any deviations from the so-called control, that is, a healthy kidney. This part of the work was necessary to study the mechanism of action of this extract on the organ. Employees of Altai State Medical University conducted other studies - for example, a biochemical blood test. Based on the totality of all the results received, we concluded that the extract has a positive effect on the body of experimental animals and can be used to prevent kidney disease,” said Natalya Semenikhina.

From Altai State Medical University, the project was attended by employees of the Department of Pharmacology named after V. M. Bryukhanov: Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Yakov Zverev, Candidate of Biological Sciences, an associate professor Olesya Mazko, Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences, an associate professor Olesya Makarova.

The result of the work of scientists from two universities was the creation of a functional food product - kissel, which can be used for the prevention and treatment of nephrotic syndrome and chronic kidney disease.
