On July 3, Sergey Bocharov, Rector of Altai State University presented a report on international scientific collaboration at the Forum of Rectors of Russian and Mongolian Universities, which is taking place in Ulan-Ude.

In his report, Sergey Nikolaevich noted that the geographical proximity of Altai Krai and Mongolian border territories within the Greater Altai predetermines long-term cooperation between the parties in the field of science and higher education.

"Our university has been interacting with Mongolian partners for over 30 years. During this time, five scientists from our university have been awarded the title of honorary citizens of the Khovd aimag of Mongolia," Sergey Bocharov emphasized.

Cooperation between universities and scientists from the two countries is progressing successfully in the fields of archaeology, ethnography, biology, tourism, religious studies, and other disciplines. The foundation for this collaboration lies in the agreements signed by Altai State University with the Mongolian National University and its branches, as well as with the Institute of Archaeology and the Institute of Geography and Geology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Sergey Bocharov highlighted that these agreements have enabled the continuous involvement of leading Altai State University scientists — professors A.A. Tishkin, R.V. Yakovlev, A.I. Shmakov, among others — in various joint research projects and expeditions conducted in Mongolia. The outcomes of these scientific activities are documented in numerous publications, including prestigious journals such as Nature and Science.

A distinct and highly significant area of Altai State University’s work in the neighboring country is the promotion of the Russian language and culture in Western Mongolia. This effort is carried out by a team of researchers led by Professor L.M. Dmitrieva. Additionally, under the guidance of Professor P.K. Dashkovsky, interdisciplinary studies are being conducted on religious and ethno-confessional processes in Siberia and Mongolia, both historically and in contemporary times. These studies enable the assessment of risks and the development of strategies for sustainable intercultural dialogue.

In conclusion, Sergey Bocharov emphasized that strengthening Russian-Mongolian relations remains a priority in Altai State University’s international activities.

“We welcome new initiatives. Altai State University is prepared to act as the coordinating institution for a consortium dedicated to exploring new opportunities for Russian-Mongolian trade and economic cooperation within the framework of the Greater Eurasian Space. The involvement of scientists and experts from diverse fields will ensure a comprehensive consideration of ecological, climatic, historical, cultural, and economic aspects of cross-border interaction. Ultimately, the outcomes of this work could serve as the foundation for cross-border cooperation programs and multilateral projects in the Greater Altai region,” he stated.
