The results of an open competition for the development of the concept of "Barnaul is a green city", announced by Barnaul City Administration, have become known. According to the results of the competition, an application prepared by a research team consisting of scientists from the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology and the Institute of Geography of Altai State University was recognized as the winner.

The research team executing the project includes: Director of the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Marina Silantyeva, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Botany Natalya Speranskaya, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Economic Geography and Cartography Olga Latysheva.

The AltSU scientists's project is a natural development of the "New Green Wave" concept, created on the initiative of IBB and presented in the City Administration on March 24, 2020 at a workshop on the concept of proving green spaces in Barnaul. Then the concept was highly appreciated by the participants of the meeting, and was approved by Head of the city Vyacheslav Frank. The AltSU scientists’ concept provides for the improvement of the greening system to ensure environmental well-being and increase people’s satisfaction with the urban space, taking into account economic and social factors. It is based on a global trend: bringing the urban environment closer to the natural environment through the use of the principles of greening natural ecosystems. It is this model of landscaping that is being introduced today in megalopolises of Europe and the United States.

The project must be completed by December 10, 2021. The contract amount is RUB 1,950,000.00.

AltSU administration congratulated the colleagues on the victory. AltSU President Sergey Zemlyukov noted:

“We see that the victory of the team of the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology and the Institute of Geography showed relevance of the scientific potential of the flagship Altai State University in various areas of development of the region and its capital, the city of Barnaul. For the third year already, we have been developing strategies for the development of municipalities - Smolensky, Sovetsky and Altai districts - within the framework of the strategic project "Sustainable Development of Altai Territories in the Transboundary Space". We also included in the development strategy our projects "Belokurikha-2", "Turquoise Katun", relating to specially protected areas. It is significant that interdisciplinary teams work here, uniting scientists from IBB, IG, IIEMIS. Now, such an interdisciplinary team will work on the landscaping of Barnaul."
