Professor of the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology of Altai State University Roman Yakovlev is included in the IVVC (Innovative Vector Control Consortium) team. It is an international group of scientists headquartered in Liverpool. The consortium's mission is world-class research and development for the control of disease-carrying insects. The main focus of IVVC's work is now concentrated in Africa but the geography of research is expanding significantly in Latin America and the Pacific region.

The first priority of the IVVC is to combat malaria. The organization supports the international program "ZERO by 40" to eradicate this disease in the world by 2040. In 2019, 229 million people fell ill with malaria in the world, about half a million died (mainly children under 5 years old), while the incidence has not decreased over the past four years.

On Wednesday, August 11, Professor Roman Yakovlev will go for the first month-long expedition to Mali, where his main task will be to supervise field research at hospitals in the Niger River Valley and advise young specialists from Mali on insect taxonomy and processing entomological material. In the future, work is expected in other countries of West Africa, as well as in Ethiopia, Zambia and Malawi.

“I am pleased that my many years of experience in Africa, the results of research on the biodiversity of tropical regions of the world and extensive international contacts have led me to this large project dealing with the issues of medical entomology and tropical medicine. First, it will be an incredibly interesting teamwork experience with truly world-class professionals. Second, it will allow me to provide my students with the most relevant research on the most important aspects of biodiversity research. It is important that this is a work that can really somehow change the world for the better,” Professor Roman Yakovlev comments on the upcoming research.
