Altai State University hosted an open lecture by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Head of the Laboratory of Supramolecular Chemistry, N.D. Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry RAS Sergei Vatsadze.

Sergei Vatsadze spoke on the topic "Structural features of bispidins as the basis for their targeted application in medicinal chemistry" to teachers, scientists and students of the flagship university of Altai Krai.

“We have been dealing with such organic compounds as bispeedins for many years. They are of interest as potential inhibitors of the main protease of the COVID-19 virus. We synthesize bispidins, and at Altai State University, colleagues are implementing the task of testing them for biological activity using special systems developed by scientists at the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology VECTOR  and Altai State University,” said Sergei Vatsadze.

Here, we mean the project "Fundamental research in the development of selective inhibitors of the main protease of the SARS-CoV-2 virus based on substituted bispidins", which in 2020 received the support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), winning the competition for the best scientific projects on the topic "Fundamental problems of spread of coronavirus epidemics" in 2020 (competition "Viruses").

Scientists from Moscow State University and Altai State University began experimental work last fall, and they have received the first results, which the researchers plan to announce only after the completion of the project.

“We expect good results from our joint work in obtaining effective active substances in the fight against coronavirus. This project is designed for two years, " emphasized S. Vatsadze.

“Altai State University has been cooperating with Moscow State University for a long time. Thanks to this interaction within the framework of the Year of Science and Technology announced in Russia and the topic of medicine and biological technologies planned for March, we invited Sergei Vatsadze to give an open lecture, who presented a relevant topic to our scientific community,” said Svetlana Maksimova, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Innovative Development of Altai State University, when introducing the scientist.

On March 4, within the framework of open lectures on medicinal chemistry, another lecture was given by Doctor of Chemistry, leading researcher of the laboratory of physiologically active substances, the Department of Medicinal Chemistry of N.N. Vorozhtsov Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry SB RAS Olga Yarovaya, who presented the topic “Monoterpene derivatives as broad-spectrum antiviral agents.”
