Employees of the Research Institute of Biomedicine of Altai State University have launched the project “Development, research and creation of functional products within the framework of the “health saving” project included in the Priority 2030 program. The project involves the creation of a line of functional products aimed at improving and restoring the normal functioning of the body of people working in conditions of increased physical exertion, high environmental pollution, unstable work daily rhythm, as well as people who have suffered from various diseases. Leading Russian news agencies have already written about the development.

These products will be based on biologically active plant materials growing in Altai Krai and Siberia. Four types of products are planned to be produced, said project manager, Director of the Biomedical Research Institute Evgeny Rusin:

“The first product is planned to have a general tonic and restorative effect. It is intended for people doing physical labor in a difficult climate, for example, shift workers. The second product is designed to help remove heavy metals, radionuclides and other contaminants from the body that can be obtained during work, for example, in a mine or a metallurgical enterprise. Those who work day and night, shifts, sleep and eat not keeping consistent with the circadian rhythms of the body can benefit from other two products. Usually, such people have disturbed sleep-wake routine, and often have problems with the gastrointestinal tract due to irregular meals and snacks. Our drugs will help to improve sleep and normalize the work of the gastrointestinal tract. We have already carried out a comparative analysis of the extracts of medicinal plants, the biological activity of the studied extracts, and developed the formulations of our functional products. Now we have to assess their safety and certification.”

The authors of the project plan to establish cooperation with representatives of the sanatorium complex of Altai Krai, where these drugs can be successfully used as a rehabilitation aid. Also, functional products can be used by employees directly at their workplaces, during shifts or flights.
Scientists plan to further certify functional products as dietary supplements. Serious requirements are put forward for the production of dietary supplements today, therefore, at the stage of manufacturing products, industrial partners will be involved, with whom negotiations are currently underway.

The project team included: Evgeny Rusin, Director of the Biomedical Research Institute, Ruslan Khalimov, a researcher at the Research Institute, Alexander Bondarev, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, a researcher at the Research Institute, and Nikolai Omelko, a laboratory assistant at the Research Institute of Biomedicine.
