AltSU sociologists launch a new project about the peoples of Siberia under a presidential grant

2 March 2022 Department of Information and Technical Support of Scientific and Educational Activities
In 2022, a new project of scientists from the Institute of Humanities of Altai State University "Siberian Frontier: Ethnocultural Spaces, Symbols, and Practices" starts. It was developed by sociologists of the Department of Social and Youth Policy together with the Altai Regional Public Organization "Positive Development". The project is headed by Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department Svetlana Maksimova. The project is the winner of the competition of the Presidential Grants Fund.

The project aims to create a professional interdisciplinary network of young researchers and civil activists interested in the development of social studies in Siberia based on understanding the problems, ways, means and ways of forming a single scientific and cultural space.

For the Siberian region, the ideas of intercultural cooperation, mutual understanding and good neighborliness between representatives of different cultures and nationalities are very important,” the organizers of the project note. “It is equally important to interest and captivate today's youth with the idea of developing and preserving the traditions of the peoples and cultures of Siberia. The fact is that the border regions of Siberia are characterized by a transboundary geo-economic position at the junction of the borders of Kazakhstan, China, and Mongolia in direct contact with historically close states and the growing markets of Central Asia. The Siberian regions of Russia are located at the intersection of large migration and transcontinental transport flows. Being practically on the border with Asia, Siberia provides opportunities for productive economic and cultural contacts. It is attractive for its natural, historical and cultural riches, and ethnic diversity. Representatives of different peoples coexist peacefully here and enter into close intercultural interaction.

The goal of the project is to create an innovative educational and enlightening platform for promoting ideas on preserving the traditions, social and cultural heritage of the nations and peoples inhabiting Siberia with the active participation of Siberian youth, scientists and representatives of civil society.

The project is scheduled for 2022 and 2023 and involves the provision of information and methodological support to young researchers and civil activists, the creation of information and analytical materials.

Several major scientific events will be held under the project.
