Altai State University hosts Russian Student Chess Championship

On August 19, the grand opening of the Chess Championship of the Russian Student Sports Union took place at Altai State University.

The organizers of the competition are the Russian Student Sports Union, the Russian Chess Federation, the Altai Krai Ministry of Sports, the Altai Krai Chess Federation, and the Regional Chess Club with the support of the Altai Krai Government.

A.A. Perfilyev, Minister of Sports in Altai Krai, G.V. Sinitsyna, Deputy Minister of Education and Science in Altai Krai, M.P. Ivakhin, President of the Association of Chess Federations in the Siberian Federal District, A.A. Polomoshnov, President of the Altai Krai Chess Federation, E.A. Zhdanova, Acting Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at ASU, greeted the participants and their coaches.

“Chess is developing so rapidly that it seems that this sport will soon become the base sport in our region. I think that our chess players will have the opportunity to glorify Altai Krai throughout the country, and maybe even the world!” Alexei A. Perfilyev said.

The participants include 32 chess players from 6 regions of Russia. This tournament is held annually in the best universities of the country. Thus, in 2019 Altai State University is privileged to become the venue of the championship.

On behalf of the Russian Student Sports Union and the Russian Chess Federation, the head coach of the Russian student chess team and the chief judge of the competitions, Maxim P. Ivakhin, thanked the Altai Krai Government and the administrative board of Altai State University for the great work in preparing the championship and contribution to the development of student sports in Russia. He also conveyed greetings to the participants of the competition from the famous Russian chess player, multiple world chess champion Anatoly E. Karpov.

The Chess Championship of the Russian Student Sports Union will be held during the week, from August 19 to 25 at Altai State University.
