AltSU presented innovative bioproducts for the agro-industrial complex of the region

Altai State University presented the advanced developments of the university scientific departments in the field of biotechnology.

The promising scientific and technological developments of the flagship university of Altai Krai today include:

• industrial scaling of a probiotic preparation based on bacteria of the genus Bacillus;
• study of the biological properties of Artemia cysts and the effect of the sterilization method on their microbial content;
• selection of cultivation conditions for producers of valuable enzymes and pigments (Phaffia rhodozyma - producer of astaxanthin, Kluyveromyces lactis - producer of chymosin);
• study of the microbiological composition and technologically valuable properties of the kefir fungus;
• study of the biological properties of rhizosphere bacteria, promising for the development of microbial preparations.

“This year, the staff of the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology, together with OOO “Arsal”, have launched a new joint project to study the technological features of the incubation of Artemia cysts and to find the most commercially efficient schemes for this process,” says the Deputy Vice-Rector for Scientific and Innovative Development of Altai State University, Professor, Doctor of Biological Sciences Alexander Matsyura. "Another promising project of Altai State University is the production of healthy planting material for fruit and berry and ornamental crops based on the method of in vitro clonal micropropagation of plants. This method allows to massively obtain high-quality planting material of such valuable varieties and hybrids of ornamental and fruit crops such as garden strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, currants, blueberries, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums, geychera, geyherella,and tiarella. In high-performance hydroponic plants, we obtain environmentally friendly raw materials of medicinal plants using hairy roots technology."

With the development of organic farming, it has become relevant to use safe biological products to combat agricultural pests. Employees of the South Siberian Botanical Garden of Altai State University have selected over 10 isolates of entomopathogenic fungi, especially virulent against pests, carried out their selection over a wide range of temperatures, tested the drug in greenhouses and made unique compositions covering a wide range of pests.

“Against the background of the abundance of chemical insecticides in the Russian market, there are practically no insecticide biological products based on entomopathogenic fungi - natural enemies of pests. Among the most promising is the development of the staff of SSBG AltSU BioTerminator. It is a bioinsecticide for the destruction of insect pests of agricultural plants. This drug is effective on larvae and adults of leaf-eating and sucking insects, cobweb mites. In particular, an effect was noted against aphids, corn and meadow moths, whiteflies, beet weevils, winter moths, Colorado potato beetles, harmful turtle, pine silkworm, potato ladybug, pine moth, pine scoop, sawfly, peach and apple fruit moth, apple moth beetle, and other types. The drug acts on all phases of pest development: adults, pupae, larvae, and sometimes eggs. It can be spread by strain-resistant insects, rain and wind. The cycle of development of the fungus is repeated, which determines the prolonged effect of the drug,” explained A. Matsyura.

The development and protection of plants regulation is facilitated by the drug called "Fitolin" developed by scientists from Altai State University. It supports the growth, development, and protective functions of plants (resistance to stress against drought, low temperatures, insufficient mineral nutrition).

The developments of scientists from Altai State University were presented at the negotiations of representatives of Altai Krai and the East Kazakhstan region of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the development of the agro-industrial complex of the two states.
