2nd-year graduate student of the Institute of Mathematics and Information Technology of Altai State University, studying in the field of “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science”, Olga Krotova became one of the winners of the intra-university grant competition with the project “Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Diagnosing Diabetic Polyneuropathy in Children and Adolescents”. She spoke about the features of her research in an interview with the newspaper Za Nauku (For Science in Russian).

Diabetes mellitus in children and adolescents is characterized by instability of metabolic processes, a high risk of complications. Therefore, it is important to establish a diagnosis as early as possible, to introduce an individual approach to the treatment of such patients.

Digital diagnostics systems that will be available to patients outside the hospital can help in this difficult matter. For example, mobile applications. During the project “Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Diagnosing Diabetic Polyneuropathy in Children and Adolescents”, we will develop several screening models for one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus - diabetic polyneuropathy. Because of it, patients feel a burning pain in their hands and feet, limbs go numb, they have flaking skin, and the balance is lost. Living becomes difficult.

It is important: models will help detect the disease without neurophysiological research methods. Such developments have been conducted abroad for several years, but we have not so many of them. We will purchase a computer using grant funds, it will help us quickly and efficiently process arrays of empirical data. I note that the tasks of medical diagnostics, although complex, are very interesting and important. When we solve them, we directly impact the life and health of people. In addition, mobile technology is a cure-all for residents of remote cities and villages, where there is simply no way to get tested. We hope our developments will help everyone, regardless of distance. I emphasize that within the framework of the project we are cooperating with the endocrinology department of the Regional Clinical Center for Maternal and Child Health. Specialists of the department are interested in this study, they are actively helping us. By the way, this is not the first joint project - we recently launched an online diabetes school.
