The meeting of ASU Faculty of Physics and Technology first-year students and research officers from Buenos Aires Alexey V. Yushkov and Evoy Dos Santos took place on 2 September 2016 at Altai State University.

The physicists told the students of classical university about the latest achievements in research of cosmic-ray particles and their experience in living and working abroad.

“Alexey Yushkov received a master’s degree at ASU Faculty of Physics and Technology in 1996. He defended his candidate’s thesis here as well and got his first serious scientific results in the field of astrophysics and cosmic physics under the supervision of Professor A.A. Lagutin. Further he started studying cosmic-ray physics with research teams of Italy, Spain, Germany and Argentina, which are the part of Auger Collaboration. Auger Observatory is the largest experimental setup with detector ever made by a human. It covers the area of over 3,000 sq. km and is aimed at detection of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays,” explained vice rector for international affairs development Roman I. Raikin.

Alexey V. Yushkov told the first-year students about research in cosmic-ray astrophysics and results received by Auger Observatory using the example of his own works.

“We study the interaction of cosmic rays in the atmosphere and the energy produced by them. Our work is to detect new particles and processes that cannot be recorded with some different accelerators or devices on Earth. Our main objective is to find out how the particles accelerate to achieve such energies and where they originate in the Universe. For example, we assume that active galactic nuclei or black holes can possibly be the sources,” said Alexey Yushkov.

The most successful students, who will be actively involved in science, will be able to go for an internship abroad after the third semester. However, for the current moment their main task is to study hard and do research.
