Today Altay State University has warmly celebrated Russian Students Day (Tatiana Day) despite the weather has been piercingly cold.

The celebration took place near campus D, where people could watch university dancers, merry-andrews and even the Empress of Russia Elizabeth Petrovna, who arrived in the royal sledge.

The event guests did not only include ASU students and lecturers, but also the participants of the II Convention of Altai Student Government Leaders – students from all higher education establishment of Altai territory. Chairman of Rectors Council of Altai Krai and Altai Republic, ASU Rector S.V. Zemlyukov congratulated everybody on the holiday:

“That was undoubtedly Empress Elizabeth’s achievement to establish the first Russian university. But then followed two more decrees: the first one by Nicholas I, who ordered to celebrate Tatiana Day and Russian Students Day on the day of Moscow University establishment, and the second one by Russian President Vladimir V. Putin, who marked this day as a professional holiday of Russian students in 2005,” reminded Sergey V. Zemlyukov. “We are now carrying on the traditions that have been setting up for hundreds of years by Russian higher education institutions. This day we celebrate youth, talents and knowledge. You’ve worked hard during winter exam session, so now it is time for you to have some rest and to celebrate Tatiana Day together.”

Congratulations were followed by eats and drinks. ASU Rector and Elizabeth Petrovna invited everyone to try hot sbiten, which was cooked according to the old recipe, and delicious pancakes.

The open-air celebrations continued in fun games, competitions, entertainments testing endurance, dexterity and strength. After the festive program the II Convention of Altai Student Government Leaders started its work.
