29 January 2016 Department of World History and International Relations
Russian and Kazakhstan Young Scientists Winter School “West and East: Regions in terms of Trans-Border Cooperation” took place at Altai State University on 26–30 January 2016.

The winter school continued to maintain the atmosphere of cooperation and creative pursuit on the second day. It was opened by organization committee chairman, Professor Yu.G. Chernyshov, who said that they were still receiving applications and claims to include articles into the collective volume. He also added that the committee would be granting those applications till the end of the school.

The experts continued the reports session started on the first day. Professor of the Department of World History and International Relations of ASU O.Yu. Kurnykin gave a detailed lecture on “Kazakhstan external policy and prospects for Russian-Kazakh cooperation”. The interesting questions he touched upon (for example, “Did the regional identity form in the countries of Central Asia?” and “What results for Russia is New Silk Road project going to bring?”) induced the audience to argue.

One more interesting report was made by Professor of the Department of Oriental Studies of ASU J.A. Lysenko concerning problems and prospects for trans-border cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan in science and education. Julia A. Lysenko decided to go back from official style of material presentation and settled on real problems that slow down cooperation development and need to be solved. These are particularly the problems of difference between Russian and Kazakh educational programs and academic degrees. She also showed curious statistics on where the graduates of Kazakh universities prefer to continue their education.

After a break the reports competition started. 16 young researchers unveiled their scientific research results and answered judges’ questions. Those who managed to show their serious scientific skills (ability to formulate the problem, analyze material, make logical conclusions and answer questions argumentatively) will be awarded the first place prizes. This competition will be continued on the third, final day of the school. The role-playing game “Projects on development of cooperation between trans-border territories of Russia and Kazakhstan” will also take place on the third day.
