On 21 April professor of Emory University (Atlanta, the USA) George R. Painter made an official visit to Altai State University. In the framework of Youth Science Days he delivered a lecture on new trends in fighting against viral infections.

It was professor’s first visit to Siberia in general and to Altai State University in particular. He got acquainted to scientific and technical background of the classical university, communicated with the colleagues, answered students’ questions and discussed the possible directions of further collaboration.

According to professor, before traveling to Siberia, he read a book about it, looked through all existing stereotypes concerning Siberians’ mindset and lifestyle.

“I was flying over Russia and admiring its enormousness and hospitability, the great number of rivers. Siberia is a marvelous, picturesque part of our planet, and now I have no more stereotypes connected with your country,” said professor Painter.

“I got acquainted to the scientists of Altai State University and can say that the do a great job. Laboratories I’ve visited are fit with high-technology equipment. Thus, Institute for Biomedicine has all necessary specialized equipment. I can admit that the extensive scientific background of Altai State University had been one of the reasons why I decided to come to Barnaul. The approach to science slightly differs from that practiced in our university. This is why the new way of thinking can give us advantages and hope for discovering something new in course of our collaboration. This is the main idea of my visit.”

After looking at the young people, who attended his lecture, George R. Painter said that students are alike in every country. Of course, there are some differences between Russian and American students, but in general their ambition for knowledge acquisition.

Professor Painter assumed that collaboration between Emory University and Altai State University had great future. Cooperation between two scientific schools will allow the scientists to make serious steps in fight against different viral infections.
