ASU students met with a lecturer from America

At the end of March students of ASU College met with Jaron Castilleya. Jaron is a lecturer, who came from Texas (USA) in the framework of the Fulbright Program. He currently holds classes for students at the Faculty of Law and International Institute of Economics, Management and Informational Systems.

Interestingly, Jaron does not limit his work with students to classes. Thus, he initiated the establishment of the reading club, where students read different books in English and discuss them. Students adore their new lecturer, as he is an easy-going, open and kind-hearted person. What is more, Jaron loves Russia and enjoys gold weather and winter sports.

Jaron Castilleya accepted an official invitation to the meeting with college students despite the fact that his timetable was very busy. It was the first time when college students communicated with a native speaker. The dialogue was conducted in two languages: English and Russian. Fortunately for students of Altai State University, Jaron is a specialist in the Russian language and literature. He speaks Russian fluently, as he started studying it in Texas many years ago. His favourite Russian writers are Dostoyevsky, Pushkin and Chekhov. Jaron reads them in the original without effort.

Jaron and students touched on many different topics: studentship, sport, hobbies, cultural stereotypes and traditions. American lecturer told the audience how to master colloquial language and elaborated on the advantages of the Fulbright program. Everyone assessed their English speech understanding skills and found out their weak points, which they could improve in the course of studying English.

“I would like to thank wonderful students and lecturers, who provided me with an opportunity to participate in this informal meeting,” said Jaron Castilleya. “I was glad to see everyone and answer the interesting questions about my work and reasons why I am here. I think that our world needs international communication between people of different identity and social background now more than ever.”
