Informatics and computer engineering is a field of science and technology, which includes a set of tools, methods and techniques of human activity, aimed at creation and application of computers, systems and networks, automated information processing and control systems, computer-aided design systems, computer software and automated systems. In recent decades, the world is rapidly developing digital technology and specialists in computer science and computer engineering are needed more and more. Graduates of this field have career prospects as network administrators, software engineers, database managers, systems analysts, etc. Another direction in training specialists is direct work with computing machines, complexes, systems and networks. This is a dynamically developing subsector of the computer industry. It is in this sector that the greatest shortage of qualified specialists is observed, who know how to work with "iron", who are familiar with programming, robotics, automation, etc.

Career opportunities and graduates
The department has a branch of JSC "Barnaul Special Design Bureau "Vostok" for specialized vocational training of students in the field of development, design and operation of special application equipment. Besides the department cooperates with Institute of water and ecological problems of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Science. ASU formed base subdepartment of information technologies and physical methods in ecological researches of Faculty of Physics and Engineering of Altai State University with the purpose of development of educational process and involving into teaching of researchers and specialists, who have enough practical experience in direction of professional activity.
