Russian and Kazakhstan Young Scientists Winter School “West and East: Regions in terms of Trans-Border Cooperation” took place at Altai State University on 26–30 January 2016.

On January 29 Russian and Kazakhstan Young Scientists Winter School continued with reports competition. The participants presented their abstracts and answered experts’ questions. After the judges had summarized the competition results, the winners were announced:

  1. Elena V. Selezneva (director of Pavlovsk Children and Youth Center) and Rimma T. Elemanova (ASU master’s degree student from Kyrgyzstan majoring in foreign regional studies) shared the first place;
  2. The second place was awarded to two participants: Ekaterina A. Biketova (ASU Department of World History and International Studies postgraduate student) and Bakhtier F. Zokorzoda (ASU master’s degree student from Tajikistan majoring in foreign regional studies);
  3. The third place was shared by Zhuldyz M. Moldagazinova (Altai State Pedagogical University master’s degree student from Kazakhstan majoring in history) and Valeria V. Haritonova (ASU Faculty of History student from Kazakhstan).

Further the role-playing game coordinated by Assistant Professor of the Department of World History and International Relations A.M. Betmakaev was held. The participants had previously been divided into two interest teams, which were supposed to present their projects on cooperation between Russian and Kazakh regions in two main directions: “Investments, Commerce and Tourism” and “Education, Science and Culture”.

The joint work was very interesting, because the teams included representatives of different countries and universities, and everyone tried to contribute their knowledge and experience to the project. The outcome was two projects presented for the discussion. As a result of the role-playing game, the Resolution of the International Expert Group of Young Scientists from Russia and Kazakhstan was adopted. Then the Organization Committee chairman Yu.G. Chernyshov drew the conclusion of three days’ work of the School and suggested the participants expressed their opinions and estimated their results. Here are the most remarkable views:

Antonina Pogodina: “I thankful for the opportunity to take part in the School, which means new knowledge and new formats of discussions to me. This is a good practice that allows one to develop the qualities of an expert.”

Elena Selezneva: “I have left West Kazakhstan recently and was glad to communicate with my countrymen and to participate in the humanities project. The reports were brilliant, extensive and thoughtful. Many thanks to everyone!”

Rimma Elemanova: “Thank you for organizing the School! I got acquainted to interesting young researchers, acquired tremendous experience and I am happy to be here with you.”

Bakhtier Zokorzoda: “I would like to thank the Department and the University. I’ve got new experience and understood what strengths and weaknesses my own work has. I also hope that the proposals on cooperation development will take shape in actions.”

Zhuldyz Moldagazinova: “I align myself with the voice of appreciation and would like to say that the schoole has given a chance to everyone of us to deepen the knowledge and learn a lot of new things. Let this project develop further and let this School become annual.”

Vladimir Kotov: “Many thanks to all the organizers! Everything turned out to be very constructive and cultivated. We made friends with each other, and I hope we will continue to meet and communicate at such conferences.”

Other participants also thanked the organizers of the project (it is to be reminded that Altai School of Political Research, Altai State University, Altai Branch of Russian Political Science Association and Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund). The only participants’ wish was to spend more time on the role-playing game. The organizers promised to take that wish into account in future.

The School was finished with the certificates delivery ceremony. Every participant also received a collective volume dedicated to the research of regions’ trans-border cooperation. The participants’ abstracts (including those by Authors from Kazakhstan that could not come) will be published in a new collective volume listed in Russian Science Citation Index database.

The School Organization Committee expresses its thankfulness to the university employees, ASU Scientific Library, V.Ya. Shishkov Altai Regional Universal Scientific Library, as well as to Professor of Abai Kazakh National University R.R. Kairbekova (Almaty), Assistant Professor of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University K.S. Kalieva (Astana) and other colleagues, who rendered assistance in realization of the School.
