ASU geographers hold the youth conference on the research of Asia

The conference is dedicated to discussion of topical issues in geography and geo-ecology, exchange of experience in research aimed at attracting young scientists to carrying out scientific developments in such areas as geography, geo-ecology, geoinformational methods, computational and information technologies.

“A number of prominent scholars will take part in the conference and open the workshops with their speeches. The participants include Director of P.I. Melnikov Permafrost Institute under SB RAS, Doctor of Geology and Mineralogy Mikhail N. Zheleznyak from Yakutia; Head of the Laboratory for Integrated Mapping and Regional Center of World Data System under the Faculty of Geography at Moscow State University, Professor Vladimir S. Tikunov; Professor of D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan State Technical University, Corresponding Member of Natural Sciences Anna V. Egorina and others,” noted Head of the Department of Physical Geography and Geographic Information Systems, Organization Committee member Oleg V. Ostanin.

Assistant Professor of the Department of Physical Geography and Geographic Information Systems, Candidate of Geography Irina N. Rotanova will present the options for realization of the project on creating the Great Altai Atlas, which is carried out jointly by ASU scientists and specialists from Moscow, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China.

Another unique project has been implemented by Altai and Yakut researchers for the last 3 years; its results will be presented at one of the workshops.

“For the present moment, Altai frost is insufficiently studied. The latest research in this field was conducted in the 1960s. The unique character of the project lies in the fact that several natural zones, different physiographical territories are studied simultaneously. Moreover, we study rock glaciers – gletchers. We conduct the inventory of gletchers in the framework of the project and are going to count the existing freshwater resources,” said Oleg V. Ostanin.

It remains to be added that more than 80 young scientists and a number of experts from Russia, the USA and Mongolia are supposed to attend the event.
