AltSU develops cooperation with Japan

On January 30–31, 2020, a workshop on Japanese-Russian cooperation in advanced technologies and a workshop on partnerships between universities, business and government were held on the Tokyo campus of Tsukuba University. The events were organized on the eve of the Year of Russian-Japanese inter-regional and twin-city exchanges, which the leaders of Russia and Japan agreed to hold in 2020–21 in June 2019 at the G-20 Summit in Osaka.

The meetings organized under the auspices of the Training Platform for Japan-Russia Economic Cooperation and Humanitarian Exchanges (HaRP) were attended by over 200 people - representatives of Russian and Japanese universities, representatives of companies engaged in economic cooperation between our countries, as well as various government organizations, supporting business.

The representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Technology of Japan, the Ministry of Economy and Industry of Japan, heads of the Trade Representation of the Russian Federation in Japan and the Representative Office of Rossotrudnichestvo in Tokyo addressed the plenary session.

Altai State University was represented by Roman Raikin, Vice-Rector for International Development.

In his report on the role of regional universities as drivers of inter-regional cooperation between Russia and Japan, Roman Raikin presented the experience of Altai State University in initiating and implementing joint projects with universities of the Land of the Rising Sun. Roman Raikin suggested a number of promising directions for the development of interregional interaction of Altai Krai with Japanese prefectures, which AltSU is ready to provide support for. Of particular interest is the development of interregional cooperation between Altai Krai and northern Japanese Hokkaido Prefecture in such areas as modern agricultural and biotechnologies, remote sensing of the Earth in the interests of government and business, the use of environmentally friendly plant materials in the pharmaceutical industry, sustainable development of territories, etc.

A report by Kanazawa University, the head university of the Japanese-Russian project “Preparing Tomorrow's Innovation Leaders”, noted interaction with Altai State University as part of a consortium of Japanese and Russian universities, in particular the successful experience of internships organized by AltSU for Japanese students, including acquaintance with pharmaceutical industry of Altai Krai.

In addition to workshops in Tokyo, Roman Raikin visited Saitama University, cooperation with which is one of the most successful cases of interaction between AltSU and Japanese universities. Roman Raikin held talks with the university management, took part in the defense of scientific work by students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, and invited students of Saitama University to take part in exchange programs, including summer schools, which AltSU organizes annually for Japanese partner universities.
