Quantum physics and biotechnology. On the Day of Women and Girls in Science, young scientists from Altai State University spoke about their research

11 February 2023 By Veronica Chakhunashvili

On February 11, Women and Girls in Science Day is celebrated around the world. This holiday was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to promote the full and equal access and participation of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Today we will introduce you to young researchers who study at the center of the Altai State University “House of Scientific Collaboration named after Viktor Vereshchagin”. They talked about their developments and thanked their mentors.

Sofia Efimenko is 17. The girl is studying the discipline “Somatic plant cloning” at the House of Scientific Collaboration.

What area of science interests you and why?

— I’m going to become a doctor; I’m interested in surgery and cardiology. In general, I am very interested in medicine.

What scientific research have you already done?

— We conducted an experiment at the DNA center: we wanted to test the effect of certain biological additives on the viability and growth of plants. My partner and I conducted our experiment on mint. The following conclusions were drawn: a certain amount of hormones significantly affects growth, that is, over a certain period, a plant with different amounts of hormones may grow to different heights or not grow at all. The most interesting thing about our work is the unpredictability of the result and process. My partner and I were sure that nothing would survive, but everything grew and survived.

Who is your teacher at DNA and what are you grateful to her for?

— My teacher is Olga Vladimirovna Bychkova, I am grateful to her for her patience and for her ability to find an approach to any student.

Maria Zhukova is 14. She also specializes in Somatic Plant Cloning.

What area of science interests you and why?

— I am interested in the field of biotechnology. I plan to develop and work in this area in the future. Now at the DNA Center we are doing a study on “Strawberry vegetation depending on the amount of hormones.” We are studying the response of strawberries to the amount of hormone added to the growing medium. This year I will participate in a scientific conference with a presentation on this research.

Who is your teacher at DNA and what are you grateful to her for?

— Olga Vladimirovna Bychkova, she gives us a lot of useful information, and also teaches us how to work with unique equipment that is not available at schools.

Daria Dmukhina is 15, she is studying the discipline “System Administration” at Altai State University.

What area of science interests you and why?

— In general, I am very interested in physics, and sometimes I also like chemistry. I also really like computer science. I studied quantum physics and did a project on this topic. Studying time in quantum physics was the most interesting for me, because I did not know that time in quantum physics is different from what we are used to. This year I would really like to speak at a scientific conference on this topic.

Who is your teacher at DNA and what are you grateful to him for?

— Shcherbinin Anatoly Vitalievich is our teacher. Everyone really likes him, and I enjoy coming to classes. He explains any topic clearly, and most importantly, in simple words.
