On May 19, the first student hackathon on processing Earth remote sensing data started at Altai State University.

During the day, teams of three universities of Altai Krai - Altai State University, Altai State Technical University and Altai State Agricultural University - will apply various methods and algorithms for deciphering space images of the Earth. Their task is to develop recommendations and proposals for individual sectors: forestry, agriculture, roads, urbanization, and other areas of the economy.

Welcoming the participants of the hackathon, Minister of Digital Development and Communications of Altai Krai Evgeny Zryumov noted that digital data processing is one of the priority areas for the development of the region.

“Space imaging is used in various industries, Altai Krai has good groundwork, scientific schools that have developed at universities, talented scientists and students who are working in this direction. Today we offered the hackathon participants several ideas for using satellite images, but they can offer their own options. At the end of the day, each team will present their work to the jury members. We will put these decisions on notice and will propose for implementation to the heads of government bodies, ministers, and heads of departments,” said Evgeny Zryumov.

The jury of the competition included: Minister of Digital Development and Communications of Altai Krai, Chairman of the Jury Yevgeny Zryumov, Head of the Department of Telecommunications and Communications of the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications of Altai Krai Ivan Barinov, Head of the Department of Specially Protected Natural Territories of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of Altai Krai Ilya Dudin, Chief Specialist of the Department of Water Resources of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of Altai Krai Oksana Prokoptseva, Head of the Department of Transfer and Commercialization of Technologies of the Ministry of Economic Development of Altai Krai Denis Raspopov, Director of Altai Institute of Digital Technologies and Educational Quality Assessment named after O. R. Lvov Miakhil Ryazanov.

Director of the Institute of Geography of Altai State University Tatiana Baikalova noted that such a hackathon was held in Altai Krai for the first time.

“In Russia, this format of work has existed for a long time, and students of our university have taken part in such hackathons more than once. It is as a result of brainstorming that new ideas, new ways, methods of image processing are born. Sometimes they are on the surface, but we, using ready-made products, often do not notice them. And it is the students who can come up with something new and interesting, something that can be used in further research,” Tatyana Baikalova emphasized.
