June 1, the international ranking agency Times Higher Education published the fifth edition of THE University Impact Rankings, which assesses the impact of universities on the development of society and the achievement of the UN sustainable development goals. The ranking includes almost 1.6 thousand of the strongest universities in the world.

The ranking takes into account the achievements of universities in reaching each of the 17 sustainable development goals, and also forms a general list - University Impact Rankings 2023, which includes 86 Russian universities.

It should be noted that, despite a significant annual increase in the total number of participants (+185 universities by 2022), AltSU maintains its position among the universities of the Russian Federation, and for the fifth year in a row has been included in the TOP-5 universities of the Russian Federation, occupying the highest positions in this global ranking.

In particular, in 2023 Altai State University ranked 301-400 in the world and ranked 4th among the universities of the Russian Federation, between RUDN University and the Bauman Moscow State Technical University.

The strongest position of AltSU in the ranking at the end of 2022 remains its contribution to the achievement of the UN goal in the field of sustainable development of society “Goal No. 4. Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

Within the framework of this goal, AltSU ensures the availability of educational resources of the university for the population, holding open lectures, summer schools, developing a system of specialized classes and further vocational education.

In 2022, work was built with 203 schools in the region - an increase in activity by 4 times.

The project "Professional environment: school-university-business" was launched, in which schoolchildren get acquainted with enterprises and the possibility of employment there after graduating from AltSU. As a result, more than 22,000 schoolchildren, including 3,000 from rural schools, are covered by career guidance and talent support programs. Dozens of projects have been implemented, many of which were launched for the first time, such as "Eco-tournament," "Discover AltSU," "TraEKTORIYA Lyceum," and "Academy of Creative Education."

Cooperation continued through Yandex Lyceum, the Humanitarian Projects Foundation and the Sirius Educational Center.

The platform "Open University of AltSU" has passed certification on the GIS “Modern digital educational environment” - the platform of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. The online courses of the university have become available to a wide audience of students and are highly appreciated by the expert community.

Educational programs for IT and non-IT areas of training in more than 20 enlarged groups of specialties and directions have been developed and updated with new end-to-end competencies.

As part of the implementation of the federal project “Development of the Human Resources of the IT Industry,” in May 2022, the university opened the School for the Development of Digital Competences “Digital Up” (Digital Department), which has become one of the key drivers in the region for the training of IT personnel capable of further develop application software and databases, create web and business applications, use modern domestic information and analytical platforms and develop our own IT solutions based on artificial intelligence for implementation in various sectors of the economy. Already following the results of the first year of the project implementation, the Digital Department of Altai State University was awarded a diploma from Innopolis University “For outstanding success in the implementation of the Digital Departments project”.

In 2022, the University took part in all announced competitions and grants of the federal project "Personnel for the Digital Economy" and became the winner of 3 competitions related to the development of EP in order to provide priority sectors of the Russian Federation with highly qualified personnel in demand in the digital economy.

The model for designing double-diploma master's programs at AltSU was highly appreciated by the authorities of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation; the collection "Best International Educational Programs and Practices" of Russian and foreign universities (AltSU together with RUDN) is recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation as a manual for improving the mechanisms of international cooperation and replication in Russian universities.

The second nomination for which the university was awarded was UN goal "No. 8. Promoting steady, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all."

Based on its results, a collection of best practices for international networking was recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation for use by Russian universities.

To participate in all-Russian projects, the university has created a regional team of the project “It’s Your Move,” which actively involves students. Note
The Times Higher Education research group rankings are among the top three most influential rankings in the world, along with QS and the Shanghai ARWU rankings.
The methodology was developed jointly with THE partners Elsevier and Vertigo Ventures. It should be noted that ranking indicators require universities to provide evidence for each of them. Priority is given to evidence that is public. Evidence is evaluated based on a set of criteria, and decisions are cross-checked in case of uncertainty. The University Impact Ranking measures the progress of the world's universities in achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, which were adopted in 2016. Any university that provides data for Goal 17 - "Strengthen the means to achieve sustainable development and revitalize the mechanisms of the global partnership for sustainable development" and at least three other goals, is included in the overall ranking. The final score of the university in the overall table is calculated by combining the scores for goal No. 17 and the three maximum scores from the rankings of the remaining sustainable development goals. Goal #17 accounts for 22% of the total score, while the other goals account for 26% each. This means that different universities are assessed on the basis of a different set of sustainable development goals, depending on their specifics.
