From March 11 to 18, 2024, a delegation from the Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies of Altai State University paid a working visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan. The delegation included Elena Ponkina, Head of the Department of Theoretical Cybernetics and Applied Mathematics, Vera Zhuravleva, associate professor of the Department, and Ivan Ryabov, senior lecturer of the Department of Computer Science.

The visit started with a meeting with Professor Raima Shirinova, Vice-Rector for International Affairs at the National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek (Tashkent), where the participants discussed the prospects for cooperation in the field of IT technologies, various joint educational projects.

Then, the delegation proceeded to the city of Denau, Surkhandarya region, to visit Denau Institute of Entrepreneurship and Pedagogy. The delegation from IMIT carried out work within the framework of the project “Development of international academic mobility programs for university students in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan” (headed by Vera Zhuravleva) under the strategic academic leadership program “Priority 2030”.

“As part of the visit, we selected a cohort of students participating in this academic mobility program, conducted an introductory educational intensive, students learned the fundamentals of programming in Python and data analysis. Then we are planning a number of events for this program, and in May we will hold a hackathon – an international programming competition involving undergraduate students from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. In general, the academic mobility program is designed primarily for undergraduate students to familiarize them with Altai State University, its faculty, and equip them with basic digital competencies for potential enrollment in the university’s master’s program,” said Elena Ponkina.

Furthermore, more than 20 students participating in the academic mobility program took part in the joint international scientific and practical conference “Artificial intelligence and challenges of digitalization for sustainable development of the countries of North and Central Asia,” which was held on March 15-16 jointly by Denau Institute of Entrepreneurship and Pedagogy, Altai State University and The Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University.

It is worth noting that for the past three years, the Department of Theoretical Cybernetics and Applied Mathematics (IMIT at Altai State University) has been working closely with the Department of Information Technologies of Denau Institute of Entrepreneurship and Pedagogy in the field of IT education. The key joint project of the two departments is the opening in 2022 of a joint educational master's program in the direction of  01.04.02, the profile “Applied mathematics and computer science in the socio-economic sphere and education” (the profile was also opened with the support of the “Priority 2030” program). This year, the first graduation of students from this educational program is expected – specialists in the field of digital technologies, analysis and modeling of various socio-economic processes, as well as teachers of mathematics and computer scientists.

Over the course of two years, 13 citizens from Uzbekistan entered the joint master’s program.
