Mathematicians from Altai State University have developed a program for the diagnosis of diabetic polyneuropathy in children and adolescents

Scientists from the Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies of Altai State University are implementing a project called "Artificial Intelligence Technologies in the Diagnosis of Diabetic Polyneuropathy in Children and Adolescents."

Polyneuropathy is one of the most dangerous and severe neurological disorders, the main characteristic of which is damage to the peripheral nervous system. Neuropathy is a condition of the body in which partially or completely peripheral nerves are affected, that is, not included in the system of the brain and spinal cord. This disease leads to impaired motor functions, loss of sensitivity, seizures, and other serious consequences that can be avoided by identifying the disease at an early stage.

This task formed the basis of the project of mathematicians of Altai State University, who developed a program capable of analyzing the medical indicators of diabetic patients, on the basis of which it is possible to determine their predisposition to polyneuropathy or to detect the disease at the initial stage, which is still in a latent form. This is a computer program based on a machine learning model, in other words, scientists from Altai Krai's flagship university have developed a high-precision mathematical module that is integrated into the information system of medical institutions.

At the origins of the creation of the computer program that helps doctors with an accurate diagnosis, there is a team of scientists from the Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies: Associate Professor of the Department of Informatics of IMIT, Candidate of Medical Sciences Alexey Piyanzin, Associate Professor of the Department of Theoretical Cybernetics and Applied Mathematics, Candidate of Technical Sciences Lyubov Khvorova, and teacher of the Institute Olga Krotova.

The program developed at AltSU works with standard indicators included in the comprehensive assessment of the health of children and adolescents, which excludes the use of special procedures and equipment that doctors traditionally use in diagnosing polyneuropathy. Thus, the advantage of this program lies in the fact that it can be used in their work by specialists of medical institutions of any level and location.

The project of mathematicians from Altai State University for the diagnosis of diabetic polyneuropathy has already been registered as an intellectual property. It has a ready and user-friendly interface. However, the developers do not stop there, they are improving their program so that in the future it can diagnose other complications of diabetes, both in children and adults.

Such an idea is unique for Russia, and in the world similar studies are conducted only in the USA, China, and Turkey.
