18 January 2016 ASU College

On January 15 tutor T.A. Burkova conducted a homeroom on traditions of Russia and other countries for international students at one of the dormitories.

The topic attracted interest of the international students, as it touched upon traditions and customs of different peoples and their national holidays.

The customs have roots stretching back into the past. Different regions have different customs, even though they can be located in the same country. These differences may show in the course of holidays celebration. For example, Christmas is the most important holiday in the West; people often go to church on the Christmas eve. Every Chinese should eat a Chinese cake during the Mid-Autumn Festival. In Japan number 4 is regarded as unlucky, because sounds similar to the word “death” in Japanese. In the Western countries people usually avoid number 13 due to religious reasons. Other countries also have their own national and religious holidays. There are interesting peculiarities in every nation.

“I enjoyed communicating with the foreign students,” says ASU College tutor T.A. Burkova. “They spoke on interesting aspects of their national cultures, traditions, customs, and holidays. I have acquired a lot of striking information that will help me understand the students better. I’ve received a lot of positive emotions from the homeroom, and I hope, the students have liked it too.”
