ASU delegation participates in "The Greater Altai" International Subregional Cooperation Conference in China

The conference took place on May 20 in the city of Altai, located in the northern part of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the People’s Republic of China. Its participants included representatives from regions that are members of the International Coordinating Council "Our Common Home – Altai": Altai Krai, the Altai Republic, the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (PRC), Bayan-Ulgii, Khovd, and Uvs aimags (Mongolia), as well as the East Kazakhstan region (Republic of Kazakhstan). In addition, the organizers extended invitations to delegations from the Abay and Zhetysu regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Altai Krai was represented at the conference by a regional delegation led by Vitaly Snesar, Deputy Chairman of the Government of Altai Krai, Head of the Administration of the Governor and Government of Altai Krai, and Head of the Secretariat of the International Coordinating Council "Our Common Home – Altai." The delegation included leaders from the regional ministries of agriculture and sports, the Center for Investment and Development, and the Department for the Development of Tourism and Resort Activities. Also part of the delegation were Roman Raikin, Vice-Rector for the International Affairs Development at ASU, and Irina Rotanova, an associate professor in the Department of Physical Geography and Geoinformation Systems at ASU and scientific expert of the ICC "Our Common Home – Altai."

During the plenary and thematic sessions, conference participants discussed cooperation in the fields of economy, culture, tourism, sports, science, education, ecology, transport, and infrastructure interconnectivity.

Roman Raikin presented a report titled "Scientific, Technological and Educational Cooperation between Russia and China: Experience and Promising Projects of Altai State University." Irina Rotanova’s speech focused on the development of scientific and educational collaboration concerning ecology, natural resource management, and environmental protection in the Greater Altai region.

As part of the conference, bilateral meetings were held between the delegation from Altai Krai and the leadership of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) of China, as well as representatives from Altai District and Chuguchak District. These meetings resulted in agreements whose implementation will bring the cooperation between the regions of the Greater Altai to a new level.

Within the framework of the thematic session "Integrated Development of Science, Education, Ecology, and Agriculture," representatives from Altai State University presented the participants with the experience and promising projects of scientific and educational cooperation in the Greater Altai region. Meetings were held with representatives from Xinjiang University and the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with whom Altai State University already maintains joint projects and many years of successful collaboration.

Additionally, new partners from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) of China — Xinjiang University of Economics and Finance, Kashgar University, and Ili Normal University — expressed interest in establishing cooperation with Altai State University. The key areas of collaboration identified include ecology, climate research, management of specially protected natural areas, tourism development, expert and analytical support, assistance in advancing trade and economic cooperation between the Greater Altai regions, biotechnology and highly efficient agriculture, study and preservation of historical and cultural heritage, as well as academic exchanges involving faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates.
